It’s a common misconception that the tomatoes are vegetables. In fact, they are fruits with various health benefits, flavors and shades of red. In this article we’ll be discussing this wonder-fruit.

Tomatoes are consumed mostly because of their splendid taste and ease of preparation. There are almost as many different ways to eat a tomato as it’s health benefits. A quick search shows that there are a few thousand food recipes with tomato as it’s main ingredient not to mention those that add tomatoes for their flavor. This is indeed very fortunate, because most people would consider something this common in our daily food consumption to be somehow harmful to us. Like soft drinks. But instead, tomatoes are very good for our health, preventing many diseases and complications. What exactly makes tomatoes such healthy fruits?

There is almost no fat in a tomato while high in dietary fibers, sugar and carbonhydrates. Tomato also includes a healthy amount of Vitamin C. Though the main reason for the health benefits of tomato is simply the red pigment known as Lycopene. It is generally known that Lycopene is responsible for the red color of tomatoes and some other red fruits. What is not so widely known is that pigment is also a very strong antioxidant. It is actually 100 times stronger than Vitamin E at singlet-oxygen quenching. And singlet-oxygen is responsible for skin aging. Which means tomatoes help you keep your skin young. Also limited research has shown that Lycopene lowers the risk of various diseases and types of cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Tomatoes are also effective against high cholesterol and heart diseases, and ongoing research might reveal a lot more health problems that can be avoided by consuming tomatoes. As of now, the exact reasons for this are unknown, but it’s been proven that eating tomatoes reduces cancer risk.

Lycopene isn’t produced in our bodies, and tomatoes account for almost all of our intake. Only the fruit known as gac includes more Lyopene than a tomato. As it is known and consumed only in it’s native region in south east Asia, tomatoes are the best source of Lycopene for the rest of the world. Another fascinating fact about tomatoes is, unlike most other vitamins, Lycopene is actually more effective when tomatoes are processed. Which means tomato juices, sauces and ketchup are much richer in Lycopene than raw tomatoes. Also, as Lycopene is fat soluble, dishes with oil make it actually easier to absorb it.

One might ask what happens if he eats too many tomato-related products. A glass of tomato juice daily is enough Lycopene to stay healthy but more than that has no harmful effects, because Lycopene is completely non-toxic.
